SAINT LEO, Fla. – Squaring off against their fourth nationally-ranked opponent this season, the Saint Leo women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-5 decision to No. 6 Florida Southern on Thursday evening at University Turf Stadium. The loss drops Saint Leo to a mark of 8-6 on the season, while Florida Southern advances to 12-2.
The Mocs were led by Kendall Kerge, who tallied five goals and two assists for seven points on the night. A total of 12 Moccasins scored goals on the night, with a balanced attack adding 12 assists, led by Caitlin Chase with a game high four.
Kaylyn Kearns made eight saves on the night for Saint Leo, allowing 14 goals while facing 22 shots in 52 minutes of play. Brittany Millsap earned two saves on the night, allowing six goals on eight shots. Katie Hammerer earned the win for Florida Southern, meaking three saves while allowing just one goal in 30 minutes of action. Taylor Gillis closed out the game in cage, making three saves while allowing four goals.
Florida Southern jogged out to a 12 goal lead throughout the first half before Saint Leo was able to get on the scoreboard on a by Minneci with 4:54 before the break. The Mocs closed out the half with one more goal to set the score at 13-1 at the half.
The Mocs carried their momentum into the second half, posting four more to pull ahead to a 17-1 advantage, but the Lions broke the run as Sheftall scored on a free-position shot with 10:35 to go. Florida Southern tallied the next two, but three straight from the Lions set the score at 19-5 with 1:22 left in the game. FSC notched one last goal with 20 seconds on the clock to close out the regional contest with a 15 goal lead.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Thursday, April 17, when they travel to South Carolina to take on No. 3 Limestone. Game time against the Saints is slated for 4 p.m. at Saints Field.
