Strong Second Half Lifts Lions over Mount Olive, 10-6
Lions Outscore Trojans 6-1 in Second Period En Route to Third Straight Win
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team used a monster second half, outscoring Mount Olive 6-1 in the final 30 minutes, to earn a 10-6 win over the Trojans on Saturday afternoon at University Turf Stadium. The win gives the Lions their third straight, and advances their mark to 4-1 on the season, while Mount Olive drops to a mark of 4-2.
Christina Minneci led the way for the Green and Gold, tallying a hat trick on the day for a game high. Joanna Chadwick matched Minneci in points, earning two goals and an assist on the afternoon, while Allie Sheftall, Alix Murray, Kelsey Burns, Emily Pittenger, and Caroline Fraser scored once each. Burns, Murray, and Sheftall dished out an assist each to close out the Lions' scoring efforts for the day.
The Trojans were led by Riann Daziel, who matched Minneci with three goals. Candace Corkin, Alysha Kulka, and Michelle Scannell added one apiece, while Katie McGovern earned an assist.
Brittany Millsap started in cage for the Lions, earning two saves while allowing five goals in the first 30 minutes of play. Freshman Kaylyn Kearns closed out the game between the pipes, making six saves and allowing just one goal throughout the half.
Their counterpart for the Trojans, Hannah Knight, allowed 10 goals while making nine saves in 60 minutes of play.
Saint Leo found themselves in a three-goal deficit after the opening 10 minutes of play, but a goal by Chadwick off of an assist by Murray ignited a three-goal run for the Green and Gold that tied the game at 3-3, with 5:08 left in the first half.
Corkin and Scannell answered back with two more for Mount Olive, extending the Trojans' lead to 5-3 with 1:18 to go in the first, but a goal by Burns with 18 seconds left pulled Saint Leo back to within one, 5-4 at the half.
The Lions exploded into the second half with a renewed game plan, and a goal by Chadwick on a free position shot with 26:32 on the clock knotted the score at 5-5. Sheftall gave the Lions their first lead of the game four minutes later on an unassisted goal with 22 minutes to go in the game, setting the score at 6-5.
Ten minutes ticked off the clock without a goal from either team, but a man-down goal from Fraser off of an assist by Sheftall at the 12:37 mark reignited the scoring streak, with Saint Leo closing out the final twelve and half minutes outscoring Mount Olive, 3-1.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 11, when they host Young Harris at University Turn Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
