Marran Scores Four Goals in 18-10 Loss to Notre Dame College

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University sophomore Stephanie Marran netted four goals, but the women's lacrosse team was unable to push past a physical Notre Dame College squad, dropping to the Falcons 18-10 on Monday evening from University Field.  The loss drops Saint Leo to a mark of 1-4 on the season, while Notre Dame advances to a record of 1-1.

The Lions saw goals from six different players, including Marran.  Alix Murray notched two, while Christina Minneci, Callie Porcher, Heather Hedrick, and Kasey Tanner scored one apiece.  Dishing out an assist on the night was Joanna Chadwick, with one.

Defensively, Saint Leo saw a big night from Brittany Millsap in goal.  The St. Louis, Mo. native racked up 12 saves on the night, six in each half, and earned two ground balls.  Marran earned a team-best nine ground balls, and led the team in draw controls with five, followed closely by Chadwick with four draws won.  Cathryn Winslow came up with four ground balls, followed by Tanner, Chadwick, and Minneci with three each.

Leading the game in goals and overall points was Notre Dame's Kristen Hull, whose six goal, two assist performance tallied eight points overall.  Madalyn Dewling, Hayley Hodyno, and Allison Merten each picked up a hat trick, as a total of six different Falcons scored goals.

The Lions found themselves in a four goal hole after the opening 15 minutes saw only Notre Dame put points on the scoreboard.  However, Tanner broke the Falcon run on a free position shot with 13:59 on the clock to get the Lions in the game with a score of 4-1.

Marran notched two consecutive unassisted goals to pull the Lions to within one with 10:39 to go before the half, but Hull and Hodyno each placed a ball between the pipes to pull the Falcons out to a 6-3 lead with 9:14 left. Porcher answered back three minutes later to close the gap to 6-4, but two more goals from NDC wrapped up the first 30 minutes of action, setting the scoreboard at 8-4 at the break.

Notre Dame opened the second stanza with three more tallies to put the Lions in a seven goal deficit with 22:33 remaining in the game, with a score of 11-4.  Minnecci and Hedrick netted two quick goals for Saint Leo before the Falcons fired four more shots into the cage, pulling ahead 15-6 with 11:21 to go.  Murray broke the Falcon's streak, but two goals from Merten extended Notre Dame's advantage to 10 goals with a shade of four minutes remaining.

Marran added two more goals and Murray one as the clock counted down, but a late tally from Notre Dame with just seconds left set the final score at 18-10.

Notre Dame led the shot count 47-25, and earned more balls off the ground 35-27.  The Falcons also won 18-of-30 draw controls, and found success on 50 percent of their free position shots to the Lions' 40 percent.
