Coors wins Elite 90 Award for NCAA D-II women’s golf

FINDLAY, Ohio – Saint Leo senior Marie Coors was named the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship, during the championship banquet on Tuesday night at the Findlay Country Club.

The NCAA Elite 90 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.

Coors is Saint Leo's first NCAA Elite 90 award recipient and the 16th out of the Sunshine State Conference since the Elite 90 program's inception in 2009-10.

Coors, the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship after finishing third overall at the South Super Regional in Elgin, S.C. She enters the four-day, 72-hole NCAA national championship with a 71.93 stroke average over 28 rounds – the lowest stroke average in all of Division II women's golf.

Coors finished among the top 10 in all 11 events in which she competed in 2016-17, and recorded nine top five finishes. She was tied for first at the Florida Southern Lady Moc Classic, and took outright medalist honors at the Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational.

An economics major, Coors graduated from Saint Leo in April with a 4.00 grade point average. She was the recipient of the University's Clara McDonald Olson Scholastic Excellence Award, which is presented to the member of the graduating class with the highest GPA earned over four years at Saint Leo University.

The NCAA Elite 90 award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
