Coors takes to the course at NCAA women's golf championship

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Women's golf senior Marie Coors heads to Findlay, Ohio, this week to tee it up one final time in a Saint Leo polo as she competes in the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship.

The championship will be held at the par 72, 6,099-yard Findlay Country Club with a total of 72 competitors competing for the individual national championship, and 12 teams battling for the team title.

Coors finished third at the South Super Regional on May 8-10 in Elgin, S.C., to earn her third berth to the NCAA national championship. She previously qualified as an individual in 2014 as a freshman, when the championship was held at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

Last season, Coors was part of the Saint Leo team that qualified for the national championship at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo., as part of the 2016 NCAA Division II Spring Championships Festival, and finished tied for fourth.

"This is something that she's done before, but at the same time she's a different player – a much more mature player," said Tommy Baker, Saint Leo's head women's golf coach. "She played well in the national championship during her freshman year – I think she finished tied for eighth – but the experience over four years and all her achievements will bode well this week."

The Findlay Country Club course also presents a new challenge – sort of – for Coors. The bentgrass fairways will be very different from what she has gotten used to in Florida and the southeast, but is very similar to what she plays on back home in Germany. The course has a classic European design that should also be welcoming for Coors.

"It's tough when you go to a course you don't know, so it's important for the duration of the practice round that you pay close attention, and that's what is good when it's just an individual because it's going to be me and her," said Baker. "It's going to be two sets of eyes and we can attack each hole with the same mindset and pick up on different things, and then afterwards meet, discuss, and put together a game plan and a hole-by-hole strategy."
