Coors named SSC Golfer of the Year; Jakobsson Second Team

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo senior Marie Coors was a repeat selection as the Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer of the Year while junior Amanda Jakobsson was tabbed for Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference, when the conference's post-season honors were announced Wednesday.

"I'm extremely happy for both Marie and Amanda. They both set a great example on how to practice and improve on a daily basis," said Tommy Baker, Saint Leo's head women's golf coach.

Coors, who was also named First Team All-SSC for the second straight year, earned the SSC Golfer of the Year award outright this season, after sharing the honor a year ago. She is the fifth golfer in SSC history to win Golfer of the Year twice.

Coors recorded tournament victories at the Florida Southern Lady Moc Classic and the Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational. She tallied eight top five finishes this season, including a second-place finish at the 2017 SSC Championship held two weeks ago. Coors recorded her season low round of 66, which matched her own Saint Leo record, at the Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational.

Coors' 71.64 stroke average heading into the NCAA Division II South Super Regional was the lowest in all of Division II, and she was one of only 25 collegiate golfers across all three NCAA divisions and NAIA with a negative stroke average versus par (-0.28).

"When you look at Marie's contribution to this program over her four years, there is no better award to complete her senior year. She came in this season with a new mindset and grew leaps and bounds as a player as the season went along," said Baker.

Jakobsson recorded a pair of top five finishes and five top 10 showings, with a tournament victory at the Stetson University Babs Steffens Invitational where she carded her season low round of 68. She held a 74.32 stroke average over 25 rounds heading into the South Super Regional.

This is Jakobsson's first appearance on one of the two All-SSC teams, after being named an Honorable Mention selection a year ago.

"Amanda had a tough start to this season, but after the first tournament she really committed to improving her overall game. This honor is a reflection of the hard work and dedication she put in to her game throughout the year," said Baker.
