Women’s golf second at SSCs; Coors finishes second

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior Marie Coors finished second on the individual leaderboard and the Lions were tied for second in the team standings as play concluded on Tuesday with the third and final round of the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Women's Golf Championship.

Saint Leo was tied for second with Florida Tech with an 893 (+29) for the tournament, after shooting a four-over 292 in Tuesday's final round. The Lions' showing was its best finish in program history, eclipsing last season's third-place finish.

Both the Lions and the Panthers were five strokes back of tournament champion Nova Southeastern, who carded a 302 (+24) in the final round and had an 888 (+24) over the 54-hole championship. The SSC title is the sixth overall for Nova Southeastern, matching Rollins for the most in conference history, and the Sharks' first since 2012.

Coors finished second among individuals after carding a one-over 73 in Tuesday's final round at the par 72, 6,074 yard Country Club of Winter Haven course, and finishing the tournament with a one-over 217. She remained one stroke behind Barry freshman Charlotte Puts, who also fired a one-over 73 in the final round and claimed the 2017 SSC individual crown with an even par 216 over 54 holes.

Nova Southeastern's Michelle Ruiz was third on the individual leaderboard with a five-over 221 for the tournament.

Junior Amanda Jakobsson turned in Saint Leo's top round of the day, firing a two-under 70 to finish the tournament tied for sixth with a 223 (+7). Jakobsson carded four birdies on the back nine, to go with a pair of birdies on the first nine holes.

Junior Vilde Eriksen climbed four spots on the individual leaderboard in Tuesday's final round, after catching fire on the back nine to finish with a one-over 73 on the day and a 226 (+10) for the tournament. Eriksen bogeyed four holes on the front nine to make the turn at four-over, then carded three birdies and five pars on the back nine on her way to finishing tied for 14th.

Freshman Izzy Lawrence posted a 76 on Tuesday and was tied for 17th overall with a 227 (+11), after an up-and-down round on Tuesday that saw her card two birdies, four bogeys, and a double-bogey. Junior Margine Arguello carded a 78 in the final round to finish with a 239 (+23), and was 32nd on the leaderboard. She went one-over on the front nine with a bogey on the par 3 no. 2 hole, but fired a five-over on the back nine.

The second-place finish at the SSC Women's Golf Championship all but assures Saint Leo of earning a spot in the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf South Super Regional, when selections are announced on Monday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m. The NCAA South Super Regional will be hosted by The Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin, S.C., approximately 15 miles northeast of Columbia, S.C.
