SAINT LEO, Fla. – With three rounds complete, Saint Leo University women's golf standout Marie Coors sits within striking distance of the school's first-ever national championship as she enters the fourth and final round of the NCAA Division II Championships at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa course in Conover, N.C.
Although Coors endured a rough back nine, the freshman from Gross-Zimmern, Germany enters the final day of competition, on Saturday, in a tie for fourth place with a three-day total of 219 (72-73-74), just two strokes behind the leader, Jessica Bradley (217) of Lynn University.
Coors is joined in fourth by Louise Manalo of Lynn University, Maria Paolo Fiorio of Barry University and Marisa Toivonen of Augustana College.
"Today was a battle," said Saint Leo head women's golf coach Tommy Baker. "She (Marie) did not have a great ball striking day, and it cost her a few shots. She did a great job staying patient and minimizing the potential for big numbers."
Coors started off her round playing even par for the first nine holes. She recorded her first bogey of the day on the par four fifth hole, however would get the stroke back on the par five eighth. She would find herself back atop the leader board at the turn, a spot she spent most of Thursday during the second round.
The back nine, however would give Coors problems for the second time in the past three days.
After paring the 10th hole, Coors would double bogey the par four 11th hole. She then shot par on the next three holes – 12 through 14 – before carding back-to-back bogies on the par four 15th hole and the par three 16th hole to go four over for the day.
Coors would get one of the strokes back when she closed out the 18th hole with a birdie to finish the round with a three over par 74.
Coors is the second Saint Leo golfer in the past three years to take part in the event as an individual. Goeun Lee finished 29th in the 2012 National Championships.
