Lions Finish 2nd in Day 1 of Smokey Mountain Invitational

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – In the first tournament under new head coach Tommy Baker, the Saint Leo women's golf team teed off Monday at the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate Invitational. The women finished the first round with a score of 299 and in second place among top regional teams.

Currently in the lead for the Lions is senior Heather Petronis and junior Lauren Petty, who both finished with an impressive score of 74 for the afternoon. The score, which sits them two strokes over par, ties them for fifth place in the tournament.

Followed closely behind Petronis and Petty was freshman Marie Coors, who finished three over par with a score of 75. Her score puts her in an eight-way tie for ninth.

Junior golfer Claire Connoly, who made a trip to regionals just last spring, finished the day four strokes over par in a four-way tie for 17th place. Rounding out the group, senior Lauren Schuford finished ten strokes over par in a tie for 47th.

The second-place team finish is just four strokes behind the leading team, University of West Florida.

The Lions will look to continue their great play tomorrow when they finish the second and final round of the tournament.
