#SSCGolf Central: Women's Golf in Sixth Place after 18 Holes

SAINT LEO, Fla. –The Saint Leo women's golf team teed it up in the Sunshine State Conference Championship, right next door at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on Sunday morning. After the first 18 holes of action, Saint Leo is sitting in sixth place with a team score of 316.

The women were led by Lauren Petty—who played exceptionally well in the first round, carding a score of 76. Petty's opening round play was strong enough to put her in sixth place among all of the individuals in the field.

Two strokes behind Petty was Clare Connolly with a 78. Connolly continued to show her consistency on the course in the first round of this championship and will look to shave a few strokes off of her score from today. Lauren Shuford came in two strokes behind Connolly as she fired an opening round score of 80. Heather Petronis opened play with a score of 82, a score she will look to get lower in the next few days. Rounding out the group was Alyssa Barrett who carded a 99 in today's first round.

"The girls played pretty solid today," head coach Erika Brennan said after the round. "Lauren Petty leading off with a 76—especially not feeling well—was a phenomenal round out of her. Clare Connolly with a 78, I know that she's disappointed in that and we know that she's capable of better things. Shuford and Heather are right there but certainly we can do better, and we know that. To move up in the leaderboard tomorrow we just need to play smart, and make sure that we're hitting a lot of greens in regulation. We're looking for those quality two-putts, not leaving ourselves short-sighted as much as we did today. I think if we're able to do those types of things we're going to be just fine and we will move up the leaderboard."

In sixth place, the Lions trail fifth place Lynn by just two strokes and third place Florida Southern and Barry by just three strokes.

Leading the way after the opening round of the tournament was Nova Southeastern who totaled a team score of 303.

The Lions will resume play tomorrow in the second round with a tee times starting at 9:05 a.m.
