Women’s Golf Improves 21 Strokes for Strong Finish at Flagler Fall Slam

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Improving 21 strokes from their day one performance, the seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's golf team concluded the Flagler Fall Slam in sixth place with a 59-over 635, Tuesday afternoon at the par-72, 6,062 yard Marsh Creek Country Club course.

With a much improved round two total of 19-over 307, the Lions jumped three positions from their ninth-place first round slot to finish just shy of the top five.  Laura Huertas rebounded in a big way in her final round, improving 17 strokes to fire an even-par.  The Bogota, Colombia native finished 24th overall in tournament standings, carding with a 17-over 161.

Clare Connolly continued to lead the team after the final outing, firing a 15-over 159, good for 20th in tournament action.  Goeun Lee, who concluded the tournament at 22nd, improved two strokes from day one, finishing one stroke behind Connolly while bringing in a 16-over 160.

Ragna Olafsdottir had a big day, as well, rebounding 12 strokes from her first round performance of 15-over 87 to record a three-over 75 her second time out.  Olafsdottir's 18-over 162 placed her in 30th overall, and fourth in team standings.

Heather Petronis completed the squad list, carding a 24-over 168 after both rounds to finish 56th.

Lynn University held onto their top spot from day one, grabbing the Fall Slam title thanks to first and second place performances from Samantha Smolen and Jessica Bradley.

With the conclusion of the Flagler Fall Slam, the Saint Leo women's golf team wraps up their fall season and prepares for their spring campaign.  The Lions return to action on Monday, February 20, when they open their 2012 slate at the Lady Moc Invitational.  For the latest news, updates, and information on the women's golf team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
