No. 10 Lions in Third after First Round of NCAA Regionals

Team Total 306 Gives Saint Leo Solid Start

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's golf team started the 2011 NCAA Tournament on the right foot as the Lions carded a team-total 306 and sit in third place at the South Region  Tournament held at The Club at Eaglebrooke and hosted by Florida Southern College.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the level of effort given today," Head Coach Erika Brennan said of her team's day one performance.  "The team played as a unit and really fought out there."

Finishing the first 18 holes in the top third of the nine-team South/Southeast Region field, the Lions were led by their two top players, with senior Jordan Hatch and freshman Heather Petronis carding 3-over-75 in round one.  Overall, the Lions' twin leaders currently sit in ninth place in the 49-player tournament.

Three strokes back, with a 6-over-78 is junior Goeun Lee who is in a tie for 22nd place with fellow junior Tricia Maloneywho matched Lee in the first round.

Rounding out the Lion five is senior Suzanne Ervin, whose first-round 84 has her in a tie for 42nd place.

With all four counters shooting +1 or better, defending national champion Nova Southeastern University ended day one of the NCAA Super Region 2 Tournament with a 4-stroke lead over #4 Rollins.

Though Rollins had the top two golfers in the field with defending champion Joanna Coe and Fabia Rothenfluh sharing the individual lead, the next four all came from Nova. Coe and Rothenfluh each shot a one-under par 71, but they were followed closely by Sandra Changkija, who shot a 72, and Taylor Collins, Abbey Gittings and Fredrika Hakansson, a trio of Sharks who all had a 73. That added up to a team score of 291 for the Sharks, the best opening round in the South Region Tournament (Super Region 2) in the 10 years it's been held.

"We've put ourselves exactly where we want to be," Brennan continued.  "Tomorrow it's all about staying committed to our game plan and execution."

The top three teams from the regional tournament will advance to the national tournament.
