Saint Leo Advances to SSC Semis with 67-59 win over Florida Tech

Keishara Green has career outing with 23 points and 19 rebounds 

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Keishara Green had a career night pouring in 23 points and grabbing 19 rebounds, and Chachi Guzman added 17 points, to lead the Saint Leo University women's basketball  team to a 67-59 win over Florida Tech in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference basketball tournament at the Silver Spurs Arena Friday night. 

With the win, the Lions – who have now won six straight and 11 of their last 15 games – advance to the tournament semifinals where they will meet the No. 1 seed University of Tampa on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. 

The win also improves Saint Leo to 20-8. Florida Tech ends the season with a 17-13 record. 

In addition to Green and Guzman, Chelsea Green and Kinnara Lewis chipped in with seven points apiece while Green also added 11 rebounds. 

Both teams came out in the first half cold offensively with the Lions shooting 34.3 percent (12-for-35) from the field and the Panthers hitting on just 27.8 percent (10-for-36) from the floor.  

Saint Leo would take its biggest lead of the first half, 10-5, with 14:10 left on the clock when Green scored the fifth of five straight points for the Lions on a driving layup. 

The Lions would eventually take a slight 29-28 lead into the locker room at the intermission. 

Florida Tech would take a two point lead, 31-29, on the three-point shot by Jasmire Brown to start off the second half. 

After Cheslea Williams and Guzman scored on back-to-back field goals to take a 33-31 lead – and the Panthers' Kayk Wilson tied the game at 33-all with 18:10 remaining – Saint Leo would use a 10-2 run, with all 10 points scored by Green, to take its biggest lead of the contest, 43-35, with 13:02 left in the game. 

The Panthers would claw their way back and take the lead for the final time of the evening, 44-43, on a Rita Acevedo rebound put back with 9:23 left. 

Although Florida Tech would hang around during the final eight plus minutes of the game, the Lions would connect of 11-of-13 shots from the free throw line, including 5-for-5 in the final minute, to secure the win.
