FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In a tough Wednesday night contest that featured the two best scoring offenses in the Sunshine State Conference , the Saint Leo Lions (14-4, 5-3 SSC) fell to the No. 5 Nova Southeastern Sharks (16-1, 7-1 SSC) by a 85-76 score.
It was Nova Southeastern who scored first, tossing up a layup within the first twenty seconds of play to put the Sharks on the board. Despite three tie scores and a one-point lead change, the Sharks never lost the lead after the eight-minute mark, heading into halftime with a 46-41 score in their favor.
After the halftime period ended, both teams came out hungry for victory, but it was Nova Southeastern who prevailed. In spite of shooting 40 percent from the field in the second half, the Lions fell to the Sharks by a final 85-76 score.
Offensively, the game was a battle on both sides, as Saint Leo shot 33-72 (46 percent) from the field and Nova Southeastern responded by shooting 31-59 (53 percent). In addition, the Lions scored 24 points off of 21 Shark turnovers.
As a team, the Lions' squad tallied 30 rebounds and 14 steals, while sinking 7 of 12 shots from the free-throw line.
Individually, the Lions were led on offense by senior Chelsea Williams, who recorded 24 points on the night; just one basket shy of her career high. Senior Teresa Manigrasso followed her lead with 22 points. In addition, junior Melissa Jackson and Williams each collected five rebounds in the loss.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, February 1 when they host the No. 13 Rollins College Tars, who Saint Leo defeated in their first SSC match of the season. Tipoff for that game will occur at 2:00 p.m. in the Marion Bowman Center on the campus of Saint Leo University.
