BOCA RATON, Fla. – Just days after picking up their thirteenth win of the season, the Saint Leo women's basketball team (14-3, 5-2 SSC) notched another Sunshine State Conference victory with a 79-52 triumph over the Lynn Fighting Knights (9-8, 2-5 SSC), Saturday afternoon. The win solidified the Lions' second winning record for a regular season schedule in Saint Leo history.
Though Lynn scored first in the contest, it was the Lions' Keishara Green who quickly put Saint Leo on the board with two back-to-back layups, forcing a lead that the Lions would never lose. After a first half in which Saint Leo outscored Lynn 41-22, the Lions returned to the second half with a combination of offense and defense that Lynn would be unable to overcome.
As a team, the Lions shot 32-64 (50 percent) from the field in the victory, sinking 7-10 free throws (70 percent) and 8-17 (47 percent) three-point shots.
In addition to an outstanding offensive effort, the squad capitalized defensively as well, tallying 43 rebounds and four blocks. The Lions also forced 14 Lynn turnovers.
Though five players scored in the double-digits for Saint Leo, every Lion contributed with at least one point in the victory. Sophomore Ashlin Gross led Lions with her 13-point performance, while senior Keishara Green notched 12 and junior Kinnara Lewis came off the bench to collect 11. In addition, senior Teresa Manigrasso and sophomore Chachi Guzman each put away ten points, and junior Melissa Jackson tallied 8.
Seniors Chelsea Williams and Chelsea Connelly contributed with six points apiece, while senior Erin Higgins threw up a layup in the first half to earn two points. With 28 seconds to play, freshman Gabby Ortiz recorded her first point wearing the green and gold; a free throw.
Defensively, Green led the Saint Leo squad with nine rebounds, and Connelly notched eight.
The Saint Leo women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday when they head to Nova Southeastern University to take on the top-ranked Sharks. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
