ANCHORAGE, Alaska – In the AT&T Hoops Classic Championship game, the Saint Leo women's basketball team (10-1) fell to the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (9-1) by an 88-68 score, Saturday night from the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The loss ended the Lions' perfect 10-0 start to the 2013-14 season.
Both teams came out ready to play, with Alaska-Anchorage taking a lead right out of the gate. The tough defensive first half would lead the Lions trailing 40-35 heading into halftime. The deficit marked just the second time this season that Saint Leo did not lead heading into the second period.
After halftime, the Seawolves launched an offensive attack that the Lions were unable to answer. Outscoring Saint Leo 44-33 in the second half alone, Alaska-Anchorage took home a hard-fought victory.
As a team, the Lions shot 22-69 (32 percent) from the field in the effort, going 22-25 (88 percent) from the free-throw line.
Despite the loss, the Lions pulled down 48 rebounds in the contest. In addition, the squad tallied 9 steals, 16 assists, and six blocks.
Senior Teresa Manigrasso led the Lions in scoring with 20 points. In typical fashion, senior Chelsea Williams followed her lead with 16 points on the night. Both earned a spot on the AT&T Hoops Classic All-Tournament team.
Defensively, Williams also led the team in rebounds with nine.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, January 4 when they host Florida Tech in the second Sunshine State Conference matchup of the year. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in the Marion Bowman Center.
