ANCHORAGE, Alaska – In the first contest of the AT&T Hoops Classic tournament, the Saint Leo women's basketball team defeated the Brevard College Tornados by a 69-42 score, Friday night from the Wells Fargo Center on the campus of University of Alaska-Anchorage. The win improved the Lions' record to a perfect 10-0 on the season.
The Lions were able to launch their offensive attack early during the first half, with the first Saint Leo basket coming just one minute into play. Although the squad outscored Brevard 27-12 in the first half, the Lions' defense was the highlight of the period, as ten Saint Leo players pulled down a defensive rebound to combine for a 31 total rebounds in the first half alone.
Much like the first period, the second half of the contest began with a quick layup in favor of the Lions. In addition, Saint Leo outscored Brevard 42-30, while out-rebounding the Tornados 24-18 in the second period.
Both Chelsea Williams and Chelsea Connelly notched nine rebounds on the night, but it was junior Melissa Jackson who led the Lions defensively, with ten. The performance signaled her first double-double effort donning the green and gold.
For her efforts, senior Chelsea Connelly was named the AT&T Hoops Classic Player of the Game.
As a team, the Lions shot 11-20 (55 percent) from the free-throw line in the victory. The squad collected a total 55 rebounds, 11 steals, and 22 assists in the effort.
The Lions will return to action tomorrow when they take on the winner of Alaska-Anchorage and Cameron. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Wells Fargo Center on the Campus of Alaska-Anchorage.
