SAINT LEO, Fla. – After a 6-0 run to begin their season, the Saint Leo women's basketball team (7-0) topped the visiting Valdosta State Lady Blazers (4-1) by a 67-52 score, Saturday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Center. The victory signaled the best start in program history for the women's squad with a perfect 7-0 record.
The first ten minutes of play went slowly for both teams, with the Lions outscoring the Blazers 14-10. In the second half of the first period, however, both squads launched an offensive attack that would lead to a 32-23 lead in favor of Saint Leo heading into halftime.
After halftime, Saint Leo outscored Valdosta State 35-27 in the second half on their way to a 67-52 win.
As a team, the Lions capitalized on the Balzers' fouls, shooting 20-24 (83 percent) from the free-throw line. The Lions' superb defense limited the Blazers to shooting just 30.8 percent from the field. In addition, Saint Leo gave up only 12 fouls in the contest.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, December 3 when they take on the visiting Flagler College Saints for their second time this season. In their first meeting, the Lions defeated the Saints by a 92-89 score. Tipoff for Tuesday's contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
