SAINT LEO, Fla. – After five consecutive wins to jumpstart the 2013-14 season, the Saint Leo women's basketball team defeated the visiting University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon Cowgirls by a 79-53 score, Tuesday night from the Marion Bowman Center. The victory improved the Lions' overall record to a perfect 6-0 on the year.
The U.P.R.–Bayamon Cowgirls came out strong in the first half on both offense and defense. As the Lions attempted to regain control, the Cowgirls were able to tie the score with nearly five minutes until the halftime period. Refusing defeat, Saint Leo pressed hard offensively to take a 41-28 lead before heading into halftime.
After returning to play, the Lions exploded both offensively and defensively, outscoring the Cowgirls 38-25 in the second half alone.
As a team, the Lions' squad shot 30-57 (52.6 percent) from the field in the victory, while earning an 84.6 free-throw free-throw percentage.
Offensively, seniors Teresa Manigrasso and Chelsea Williams led the Lions in scoring, with 19 points each in the win. Defensively however, senior Chelsea Connelly led all players in rebounds with 14. Junior Melissa Jackson followed suit with 10, a career-high for the newcomer.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, November 30 when they host the visiting Valdosta State Blazers. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
