ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Just two days after their first contest of the 2013-14 season, the Saint Leo women's basketball team captured a 92-89 victory over the Flagler Saints. The win improved the Lions record 2-0 on the year.
Once the buzzer sounded to begin the contest, Flagler burst into action, scoring seven straight points before the Lions could make a shot. After a Saint Leo timeout was called to slow the Saints' momentum, the Lions bounced back with an astounding twelve straight points to gain the lead.
Once the Saint Leo squad commanded the lead, the Lions never looked back, striding into halftime with a healthy 48-38 lead.
After halftime expired, the Lions exploded on both offense and defense to take home the contest.
Sophomore-transfer Chachi Guzman led the offensive effort for the Lions, notching 22 points on the night in due part to a perfect 13-13 made free throws. In addition, Guzman collected 10 assists, four rebounds, and two steals, earning her a double-double.
Adding to Guzman's performance, Saint Leo had four other players shooting in the double-digits. Seniors Teresa Manigrasso and Chelsea Williams each tallied 18 points on the night, while senior Keishara Green and senior Erin Higgins recorded 15 points and 13 points, respectively.
Defensively, senior Chelsea Connelly led the Lions in rebounds with seven.
As a team, the Lions squad shot for 67.6 percent from behind the free throw line, collecting eight steals and 39 total rebounds.
Saint Leo will get back in action on Thursday, November 14 when they kick off the annual Saint Leo Classic tournament. The Lions' first game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m, against St. Augustine's University.
