Lions Open Season with 83-53 Win Over Visiting Sailfish

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In their 2013-14 season opener, the Saint Leo women's basketball team defeated the visiting Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish by a 83-53 score, Saturday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Center.

After a grueling first half that left the Lions with a 33-31 lead heading into halftime, the squad rebounded in the second half to outscore the visiting Sailfish 50-22.

Seniors Chelsea Williams and Chelsea Connelly led the Lions in scoring on the afternoon, tallying 17 points apiece. The pair also led the team in rebounds, with nine and six, respectively.

Newcomer Chachi Guzman had a stellar performance in her first contest donning the green and gold, scoring 16 total points and shooting 50% from the field. In addition, senior Teresa Manigrasso collected 14 points on the night, earning a field goal percentage of 84%.

As a team, the Lions compiled a 48.5 field goal percentage, while draining 10 of 16 free throw attempts. In addition, the squad collected 48 total rebounds on the afternoon, 23 of which came in the second half.

The Saint Leo women's basketball team will return to action on Monday, Nov. 11 when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to take on the Flagler Saints. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
