Lions Top Florida Southern on the Road, 66-59

LAKELAND, Fla. –The Saint Leo women's basketball team picked up a huge victory on the road Wednesday night at Florida Southern, topping the Mocs 66-59 from the Jenkins Field House. The Lions improve their record to 11-11 overall and 6-6 in the SSC while Florida Southern drops to 9-13 and 3-8 in conference.

Five different Lions finished the game in double figures—a season first for Nikki Jessee's squad.  Kinnara Lewis had an impressive offensive game as she collected 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Tallying 12 points on the evening were both Chelsea Williams and Keishara Green, who both made their presence known in the low post. Teresa Manigrasso dropped in 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting while also collecting three steals on the night. Also having a hot hand tonight was Elise Clyburn. The senior went 3-for-3 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line to total 11 points on the victory.

In the first half the Lions were led by Lewis and Manigrasso who each tallied six points in the opening period.  Six different Lions scored in the opening period as the team shot 44 percent from the field. The half included three ties and three lead changes but the Mocs made a basket in the final possession of the half to take a 26-25 lead going into the intermission.

The Lions came to play in the second half and quickly turned the halftime deficit around to take the lead. Once the Lions took the advantage the Mocs took the lead back just once around the seven minute mark. From there on out the Lions controlled the game and used their defense and timely shooting to put away the Mocs.

The Lions defense forced five shot-clock violations on the night while also scoring 20 points off of turnovers. The Saint Leo post play dominated the key—outscoring Florida Southern 36-20 in the paint. For the game the Lions shot 48 percent from the field.

The Lions get back in action on Saturday when they travel to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech. Tipoff for that game is set for 2:00 p.m.
