Lions Drop Conference Game at Lynn, 68-58
BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Saint Leo women's basketball team fell to the Lynn University Fighting Knights on Wednesday afternoon from the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center by a score of 68-58. The Lions went on a 12-2 run in the second half to get back in the game, but the comeback came up just short. Saint Leo moves to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in Sunshine State Conference play. Lynn improves their record to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in SSC play.
Keishara Green matched her career high in scoring with 12 points while pulling down 11 rebounds in the double-double performance. Chelsea Williams quietly dropped in 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Chelsea Connelly contributed seven rebounds and 12 points—six of which came from two clutch threes she made during the Lions' second half comeback. Elise Clyburn scored 11 points—a new season-high for the senior.
The Lions got off to a slow start in the first half that put them in a hole early. The Lions' shooters struggled throughout the entirety of the half—going just 7-for-17 from the field. Green led the offensive effort with six points while pulling down four rebounds. Christina Granville grabbed seven rebounds in the first half—five of them coming on the offensive end. The Lynn defense held Manigrasso to just four points in the first period.
Trailing 36-20 at the half, the Lions opened the second half on a five-point run and eventually reduced the Lynn lead nine before Lynn extended their lead back to 16. Trailing 58-42 the Lions would proceed to go on a 12-2 run to get within six of the Fighting Knights. Unfortunately the Lions comeback would end there as the Fighting Knights secured the win at the free throw line.
For the game the Lions shot 35 percent from the field and went 13-for-19 from the free throw line.
Lynn was led by the conference's leading scorer Kira Harvey who scored 17 points. The Lions' defense held Harvey to just 3-of-8 shooting but she was able to make 10 free throws.
The women's basketball team gets back on the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they welcome Barry University to the Bowman Center. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
