ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (9-8, 4-3 SSC) defeated Eckerd College (7-7, 4-3 SSC) on Wednesday evening by a final score of 53-47. Behind a double-double performance from Keishara Green the Lions were able to prevail and get a huge Sunshine State Conference win.
Teresa Manigrasso led Saint Leo in scoring with 14 points, but it was Green's 10 points and 11 rebounds that propelled the Lions to the victory. Manigrasso also added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Chelsea Connelly added seven points and six rebounds, and Christina Granville dropped in five points while pulling down seven rebounds.
In the first half of action the Lions rallied behind Green's five points and five rebounds to cruise into the break with a 26-19 lead. Manigrasso scored six first half points—going 3-for-7 from the field. Connelly also tallied five opening half points.
The second half was much of the same—with the Lions in control of the game the entire time. The Lions struggled from behind the arc, but made up for it with strong play in the post from Green and Chelsea Williams—who dropped in two straight buckets at one point in the half to keep the Tritons an arm's length away. Eckerd cut the Saint Leo lead to one point with about seven minutes to go, but the Lions turned their defensive pressure up a notch and were able to put away the Tritons in the final few minutes.
For the game Saint Leo held the shooting edge just slightly—going 33 percent from the field compared to Eckerd's 31 percent.
The women's basketball team gets back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they welcome the Rollins College Tars to campus. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
