MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (7-19, 1-15 SSC) fell to the Barry University Buccaneers (18-8, 12-4 SSC), 71-51, in the regular season finale, Saturday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference action from the Health and Sports Center.
Sharp Buccaneers' shooting and steady ball control proved to be difference in the game as Barry shot 40 percent (25-for-61) from the field. In addition, Barry committed just seven turnovers and forced the Lions into 23 others resulting in 31 points.
Still, Saint Leo featured a pair of double digit scorers as Chelsea Williams put in 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Meanwhile, Chelsea Connelly registered her third double-double of the season as she chipped in 10 points and added a team-high 13 rebounds.
Barry set the tone early as a 7-0 lead gave the home standing Buccaneers the momentum. Barry continued to press on the offensive end as they soon held a 16-5 lead behind Yvonne Houston's eight points. Still, the Lions, as they have all season, bounced back and began to chip away at the lead. Saint Leo, thanks to the interior play of Williams, as well as a cast of others, proceeded to go on a 17-4 run which got them to within one, 21-20, with 5:03 to play. Barry reversed the run over the final five minutes as they closed the half on an 11-3 run to go into the locker room up 32-23.
Out of the halftime break, the Lions used the opening nine minutes to outscore the Buccaneers 16-10, cutting the lead to 44-39 with 11:36 to play. Williams was dominant during the stretch as she poured in 11 of the 16 points. Unfortunately, the five-point margin was as close as the Lions got as Barry expanded the advantage back to double-digits over the remaining portion of the game, securing the conference win.
Despite the final score Saint Leo out-rebounded Barry, 49-35.
The Lions game ends the Lions 2011-12 season. The future is bright, however, as the entire youthful and talented cast returns for 2012-13.
