Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest to Florida Southern, 83-64

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (7-16, 1-12 SSC) fell to the No.24-ranked Florida Southern College Moccasins (19-5, 10-4 SSC), 83-64, Wednesday evening from the Jenkins Field House.

The Sunshine State Conference clash saw a career-high 21 points from Lions' sophomore guard Chelsea Connelly, but 10 three-point field goals, including three by Sofie Lundberg, led the Moccasins to the double-digit win.

Aside from Connelly's team-leading 21 points, Chelsea Williams and Kinnara Lewis registered 13 points apiece. Christina Granville led the Lions with eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Michaela Hawley paced the Mocs with 18 points.

Taking the Moccasins head on, the Lions went point-for-point with Florida Southern finding themselves down just two points, 18-16, with 9:38 to play. However, Florida Southern rallied-off 12 of the next 15 points to claim an 11-point, 32-21, lead. Elyse Clyburn connected on a three-point basket to cut the lead to seven, 32-25, but a 15-9 lead by the Mocs over the remaining five minutes of the first saw them go into the locker room up 13, 47-34.

Out of the halftime break Connelly scored six straight points to cut the lead to seven. Unfortunately, a scoring drought over the next six minutes of action allowed Florida Southern to run out to its biggest lead of the game, 59-42, with 12:48 to play. The Mocs held that running margin for the remainder of the contest, despite Connelly and Lewis pouring in 12 of the Lions' final 16 points.

The Lions dominated the boards, 42-31, but 28 points off of 21 Lions' turnovers proved to be the difference. For the game, the Lions shot 40 percent (23-of-57) and made six three-point shots.

The Lions will return to action on Saturday, February 18, when they host conference foe Nova Southeastern University. The SSC showdown is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
