SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-14, 0-10 SSC) fell to the Florida Tech Panthers, 87-46, Saturday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Taking the Sunshine State Conference matchup, the Panthers used 34 points in the paint and 28 points off 18 Lions turnovers to claim the win.
The Panthers jumped out to an early first half lead as they use strong interior play to take a 16-6 lead. The visitors continued to steadily increase their double-digit advantage as they soon claimed a 35-15 lead. The Lions' Hill trimmed the Panthers' lead as she, along with Keishara Green rallied-off five straight points. However, Florida Tech kept the Lions scoreless over the remaining minutes to go into the break up, 40-20.
The two teams traded baskets during the opening minutes of the second half as Williams scored the opening eight points for the Lions. Unfortunately, the Panthers regained momentum of the game minutes later as they went on a 15-5 run, eventually claiming the double-digit win.
In total, the Lions shot 28 percent (17-for-60) for the game. In addition, the Saint Leo trailed in the rebounding department, 54-32. The Panthers' bench also had a significant say as they chipped in with 35 points.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, February 8, when they host rival the University of Tampa from the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The SSC showdown is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
