Women’s Basketball Falls to Barry 59-49

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball (6-12, 0-8 SSC) fell in a Sunshine State Conference contest to the Barry University Buccaneers (11-6, 6-2 SSC), 59-49, Wednesday evening from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

Fighting back from a seven-point second half deficit, the Lions could not hold their two-point advantage as the Buccaneers pulled a way over the final two minutes to claim the 10-point win.

Chelsea Connelly collected her team-leading third double-double of the season as she scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Chelsea Williams scored a team-high 18 points and Shalisa Hill posted nine rebounds.

A nip and tuck battle for much of the game, the Lions opened the game with a 4-0 lead behind a pair of layups from Connelly and Williams. Barry responded, however, with an 11-0 run to take a seven-point lead with 13:57 to play. The run was answered by a Saint Leo flurry as they rallied-off nine consecutive points to regain the advantage. The gain was short-lived as Barry jumped back out in front on a three-pointer by Colette Eule. Barry protected its minimal lead over the remaining nine minutes as they went into the locker room up seven, 26-19.

The second half featured an aggressive Lions' bunch as they quickly diminished the Buccaneer lead with a 14-5 run to take two-point behind the efforts of a Connelly jumper. Saint Leo could not hold its lead, however, as Barry's Eule struck with a go-ahead three with 13:!3 to play. Barry slowly built its lead to as much as eight with 6:30 to play. An Elyse Clyburn three, coupled with a Connelly jumper, cut the advantage to three, 44-41, with 5:26 to play. The Lions could not pull any closer as Barry iced the game with six free throws over the final minute.

Overall, the Lions posted a better shooting percentage than the Buccaneers, 33.3 percent. However, seven three-pointers by the Buccaneers proved to be the difference as the Lions were only able to connect on two. Barry also held a 44-35 rebound advantage.

Following a bye on Saturday, Saint Leo will hit the road for a Sunshine State Conference contest with the Lynn University Fighting Knights on Wednesday, February 1.  The mid-week contest is scheduled to Tip–off at 5:30 p.m. from the deHoernle Center on the campus of Lynn.
