Women’s Basketball Drops SSC Road Game to Tritons, 79-56
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-10, 0-6 SSC) fell on the road to the Eckerd College Tritons (10-4, 4-2 SSC), 79-56, Wednesday evening from the McArthur Center in Sunshine State Conference action.
Nine first half three-pointers, all of which occurred in the first half, sent the Lions to a double-digit road loss. The defeat overshadowed a career-night from Chelsea Connelly as she poured in 19 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Saint Leo started the contest red-hot, connecting on three of its first four shots, including a pair of three-pointers by Shalisa Hill and Chelsea Connelly. However, the Lions early 8-6 lead was reversed as the Tritons countered with precision three-point shooting. In fact, over the next 10 minutes of action, the Tritons converted on six three-point field goals to give themselves a double-digit advantage. Being sparked to go on a 37-16 run over the last 17 minutes of the half, the Tritons defense denied strong first half efforts from Keishara Green and Connelly as they went into the halftime break up 25, 49-24. In total, Eckerd registered nine three-point makes, out-rebounded the Lions, 26-11, and shot 50 percent (16-for-32) for the half.
A much more aggressive Lions' bunch took the court in second half as Saint Leo posted a 9-2 run early in the second half to get the score within 20. Still, the Lions could not keep up the Tritons' scoring pace as they expanded their double-digit advantage over the course of the second half. Despite the final tally, the Lions did outscore the Tritons in the second half, 32-30. Connelly also demonstrated a strong second period as she converted a team-high 13 points, en route to a season-best 19-point evening.
Overall, the Lions were out-rebounded, 43-28, but committed a season-low 10 turnovers. Saint Leo also posted a season-high six blocks.
Saint Leo will continue its SSC road swing on Saturday, January 20, when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to take on Nova Southeastern. Tip–off for the game is set for 5:30 p.m.
