No.11 Rollins Surges Late to Upend Saint Leo, 60-41

SAINT LEO, Fla. – With the Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-9, 0-5 SSC) holding a 35-32 lead midway through the second half, the No.11-ranked Rollins College Tars (13-1, 5-0 SSC) went on a 16-0 run to take away a Sunshine State Conference victory, 60-41, Saturday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

The Lions, who were led by a 12-point performance from junior Shalisa Hill, could not overcome 26 turnovers which were converted into 25 points. In addition, the Tars' bench outscored Saint Leo, 26-8.

The Lions put the Tars' number 11 ranking to the test during the opening 20 minutes. Controlling the pace of play from the onset, the Lions kept the normally potent Tars' offense at bay, allowing them to score just two points over the first 8:08. The 6-2 score didn't stay for long as both teams began to trade baskets. Kinnara Lewis gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 18-13, with a jumper at the 3:43 mark. The Lions could not maintain the lead, however, as the Tars closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 23-21 halftime advantage.

The second period started out as the same offensive stalemate as the first half with the Lions eventually gaining a three-point, 35-32, lead behind a jumper from Hill. However, a Tera McDaniel layup with 11:40 to play sent the visitors on a 16-0 stretch over a two minute span, and a 28-6 run over the remaining portions of the game, sending the Tars to the 19-point win.

The Lions shot 30.9 percent (17-for-55) from the field, outshooting the Tars by four percent (19-for-69). The game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes.

Saint Leo will return to action on Wednesday, January 18, when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on Eckerd College from the McArthur Center on the campus of Eckerd.
