Women's Basketball Falls to No.23 Delta State, 59-47
SAINT LEO, Fla. – With No.23-ranked Delta State (5-3) scoring 20 of the first 24 points of the game, the Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-3) fell to Lady Statesmen by the final score of 59-47, Monday afternoon from the Jenkins Field House in Lakeland, Fla.
The regional tilt saw the Lions jump out to a 4-2 lead, but 18 consecutive points by Delta State set the tone for the remainder of the game as the Lady Statesmen secured the 12-point win.
Despite finding themselves down 16 with 11:20 to play, a feisty Lions' bunch clawed their way back into contest as they went on a 9-0 run. Shalisa Hill ignited the run with seven consecutive points, including a key three-point basket, to help cut the lead to nine with 7:21 to play.
Delta State soon regained momentum as its defense held the Lions to three points over the final seven minutes of action to go into the halftime break up 14, 32-18.
The second half featured a more consistent and aggressive Lions' team as they outscored the Lady Statesmen, 29-27.
An 8-2 run by the Lions to begin the second half, cut the Delta State lead to eight, 34-26. However, over the final 15 minutes, the two teams went point-for-point, with the Lions seemingly never breaking the double-digit barrier. The Lady Statesmen connected on six consecutive free throws over the final two minutes to secure the 12-point victory, 59-47.
Overall, Saint Leo forced nine steals and continued its hot shooting as they hit on 41 percent (19-of-46) of their shots.
Following the Christmas break, Saint Leo will look to snap their three-game mini skid as they host Millersville University on Wednesday, December 28, in non-region action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from the Marion Bowman Activities Center. For the latest news, information, and updates on the women's basketball team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
