LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-2) fell to regional foe Alabama-Huntsville (7-1) by the score of 86-59, in day one of the Florida Southern College Classic, Sunday afternoon from the Jenkins Field House in Lakeland, Fla.
A 55-point second half propelled the Chargers to the 27-point win as they connected on 12 three-point field goals and forced 34 Saint Leo turnovers. Jasmine Hammon did the majority of the damage for UAH as she poured in a game-best 20. For Saint Leo, the Lions saw three double-digit scorers, including a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds from Chelsea Williams as they shot 45 percent from the floor.
In the first half, the Lions saw a high-powered Huntsville squad jump out to a 13-3 lead. Still, a feisty Lions' bunch soon responded as four different scorers cut the lead to two, 15-13, with 9:14 to play. The Chargers, however, slowly pushed their lead back to 10 in the final stages of the half. Saint Leo responded with one final rally during the final two minutes to cut the Chargers' lead to five, 31-26, just before the break.
A fast-break layup by the Lions' Kinnara Lewis cut the lead to three out of intermission. However, the shot sparked the offensive minded Chargers to score eight consecutive points to take a 41-28 lead. After growing their lead to 14, the Chargers were stoned by a strong Lions' defense which only allowed six points over the next four minutes. During that time, Shalisa Hill led a charge which saw Saint Leo shrink the Chargers' lead to five again, 54-49.
Still, the final nine minutes belonged to Alabama-Huntsville as their offense exploded for 32 points on five three-pointers to seal the double-digit win.
The Lions forced the Chargers into 24 turnovers which they converted into 20 points. Lewis added 10 points and Hill went 5-of-8 from the floor en route to a 10-point afternoon.
