LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team shot a better percentage than their Sunshine State Conference counterparts, but it was not enough as the host Florida Southern College Moccasins handed the Lions their 12th loss of the year in a 73-62 road defeat in SSC action from FSC’s Jenkins Field House on Wednesday evening.
For the entire night, the Lions shot 36.5 percent (23-for-63) while holding the Mocs to a 32.4 percent average (24-for-74), but the home-standing Moccasins made their buckets when they needed them, especially when the Lions cut the lead to just two-points halfway through the second half. Florida Southern also nailed eight three-pointers throughout the game, while the Lions missed on every one of their six chances.
Saint Leo (10-12, 2-10 SSC) stayed even with the Mocs in the first half, although Florida Southern did jump out to a 10-point lead at the 10-minute media timeout. The Lions would respond by cutting the lead to two-points with 21 seconds left, and they would head into the lockers down just four after the Mocs hit a jumper with just four seconds to go.
The Lions came out of the halftime in a scoring drought as they saw Florida Southern quickly gain a seven-point advantage. The Moccasin lead would fluctuate the entire half, getting as low as a point with 12:50 remaining, and as high as 12 with 25 seconds left.
The biggest run for the Moccasins (16-6, 7-5 SSC) came after Saint Leo cut the lead to two with 9:11 left in the game. Florida Southern would respond with a 7-0 run and then answer every Lions basket for the rest of the contest.
Saint Leo was led by Marquita Fenn, who posted a double-double on the evening. She combined 20 points with 13 rebounds in the loss. Two other Lions saw double-figures as Melissa Guerero came off the bench to post a double-double as well with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dominique Daniels was sandwiched in between the seniors with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
The Lions will remain on the road as they travel to Boca Raton for a Valentine’s Day showdown with Lynn University. Saint Leo will square off with the Fighting Knights on Saturday afternoon with the opening tip going up at 5:30 p.m. The game will be carried live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
