SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (7-5, 0-3 SSC) fell 83-75 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center Wednesday evening to the Florida Southern College Moccasins (10-2, 2-1 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference action.
The Lions found themselves in an eight point deficit just three minutes into the game but rallied to take a one point lead, 14-13, with 12:15 remaining.
The two teams continued to trade points for the remainder of the half but FSC gained a two point advantage with 6:25 to go at 25-23. The lead quickly grew to seven before Saint Leo, led by Marquita Fenn, put the brakes on the Mocs’ run. Fenn hit two key baskets to cut the FSC lead down to 38-31 as the half ended.
Whitley Washington immediately got the Lions going in the right direction on offense, hitting a three point shot and a pair of free throws in the first 1:30 of the second half. SLU tied the game at 38 scoring the first seven points of the half. The Lions didn’t let off the pedal either, going on to score eight of the next nine points. Monique Reynard concluded the run with layup to give the Lions an eight point lead with 16:48 to go.
The Mocs withstood the offensive onslaught by the Lions and began to creep back into the game. FSC scored three consecutive baskets over the course of the next three minutes and cut the Lions’ lead to two with 14:50 to go.
Still, the Lions and Fenn were able to keep between a two and five point cushion for the next five minutes. However, with 8:28 to go and down by two, the Mocs’ Alli Fogle hit a three point jumper to give the Mocs a one point lead, 64-63.
Florida Southern never relinquished the lead, as tough defense held the Lions to just four points over the next six minutes.
Another Mocs’ three point basket gave FSC an eight point lead with 1:57 to go at 75-67. The Lions offense began to roll once again but the lead was to much to overcome as the Moccasins hit their final four free throws o solidify the eight point win.
The Lions were led by Fenn as she collected 23 points and nine rebounds, falling just one rebound shy of a double-double. Washington also played a tremendous game scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Reynard was the third Lions in double figures, scoring 11 points going 2-for-4 from behind the three point line.
SLU shot 37 percent from the floor (27-for-79) while the Mocs remained hot for the majority of the game shooting 43 percent (28-for-65). The Lions shot an outstanding 41 percent from the three point arch (7-for-17) but FSC went 12-for-26 shooting 46 percent. The Lions made it to the charity stripe 11 times and all but one of their attempts (91%).
The Lions get set to take on the Florida Tech Panthers in SSC action this Saturday, January 10. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm and the game can be heard live on the Saint Leo Lions Audiocast Network.
