Saint Leo, Fla. (March 6, 2008) – Saint Leo University women’s basketball player Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) was named Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference, it was announced Thursday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.
Guerero led the Lions in the regular season with 12.0 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per contest. The junior was especially prolific in SSC contests, as she averaged 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in 16 conference games. Guerero scored in double figures a total of 12 times in the regular season, including six times in the final seven games of the year.
All nine conference institutions were represented on the 2007-08 All-Sunshine State Conference Women’s Basketball Team. Nova Southeastern’s Stephanie Sarosi was named Player of the Year, while Tampa’s Sheena Walton was selected Defensive Player of the Year. Chelsea Johnson of Florida Southern was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Nova Southeastern’s Marilyn Rule received Coach of the Year honors.
Joining Sarosi, Walton, and Johnson on the All-Conference First Team were Jennifer Musgrove from Rollins and Olivia Nagle from Eckerd. Receiving All-SSC second team recognition were: Guerero, Princess Bailey (Barry), Rachel Brockman (Lynn), Emer Foley (Florida Southern) and Jade Williams (Lynn).
Named to the All-Freshman Team were: Johnson, Kquanise Byrd (Florida Southern), Ashley Lutz (Eckerd), Lynisha Nelson (Florida Tech), and Abbie Tepe (Nova Southeastern).
Voting for the All-SSC Women’s Basketball Team was conducted among the league’s head women’s basketball coaches and sports information directors.
