St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 23, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (8-9, 1-5 SSC) fell 98-72 to Eckerd College (11-6, 1-5 SSC) on Wednesday night in Sunshine State Conference action at Eckerd’s McArthur Center.

The Lions were led by senior Latasha Lawrence (Jacksonville, Fla.), as she scored a team-high 15 points.  Four Eckerd players scored in double figures to lead the Tritons to their third straight win over the Lions dating back to last season.  Eckerd junior Olivia Nagle led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting.

The game started out close, as there were 12 lead changes in the opening half.  The Lions led by eight with 8:38 left in the opening half, but Eckerd used a 9-0 run to lead by one.  After the lead exchanged hands four more times in the closing minutes of the first half, the Tritons scored the final six points to take a 41-38 lead at half-time.

Eckerd blew the game wide open in the second half, outscoring Saint Leo 57-34.  The Tritons led by as many as 29 points in the second frame, as Nagle scored 17 of her game-high 27 points after the half-time break.

The Tritons were red hot from the field throughout the night, finishing 61.3% (38-of-62) from the field.  Eckerd also turned Saint Leo’s 25 turnovers into 39 points compared to the Lions’ 20 points off of the Tritons’ 21 turnovers.  Eckerd’s defense totaled 18 steals in the contest, and the Tritons had a commanding 50-26 advantage in points in the paint.

The Lions return to the hardwood on Saturday with a trip to Miami Shores, Fla. to face Barry University in another SSC match-up.  Opening tip for the women’s game is at 2:00 p.m. at Barry’s Health and Sports Center.
