Saint Leo, Fla. (January 16, 2008) – Freshman guard Whitley Washington (Gainesville, Fla.) made a lay-up with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (8-7, 1-3 SSC) to a 63-62 win over visiting Florida Southern College (9-6, 2-3 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference game at the Bowman Center.

Washington drove to the lane with time winding down on the game and shot clock to record her only bucket of the game and give Saint Leo its first SSC win of the season.

Saint Leo was led in the game by Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) who scored 18 points, while Latasha Lawrence (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) added 12 points.  Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) added 11 points, including a key three-point play with 3:02 left in the contest.

Florida Southern’s Chelsea Johnson scored a game-high 23 points in defeat for the Moccasins, while Kquanise Byrd also was in double figures for the visitors with 10 points.

Saint Leo jumped to an early lead, outscoring Southern 13-4 in the opening 4:22 of the game.  The Lions led by as many as 13 on two occasions in the opening half.  However, Southern tied the game at 27 with 1:57 left on the strength of a 17-4 run.  The teams eventually went into the locker room tied at 29 apiece.

FSC led by four early in the second half and eventually stretched its lead to eight with 6:34 left in the game.  The eight-point lead was in place again just over a minute later, but the Lions scored the next six points to close within two.  Saint Leo closed to within one twice down the stretch and with time ticking down on the game, and in the Lions’ possession, Washington drove to the lane and made her first field goal of the game to give the home team its first lead of the second half, and the win.

Southern had two chances to win the game in the final possession, but a missed jumper by Castro was followed by a missed put back by Emer Foley before the buzzer sounded.

The Lions will remain home on Saturday afternoon to face Nova Southeastern University in another SSC encounter.  Opening tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
