Tampa, Fla. (January 9, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (7-6, 0-2 SSC) fell 69-53 to the University of Tampa (10-2, 3-0 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference game played at Tampa’s Bob Martinez Sports Center.

Saint Leo junior Melissa Guerero (Trinidad & Tobago) scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, but Tampa’s Angel Guiu led all scorers with 18 points, as she was 6-of-9 from the field with all six of her field goals coming from beyond the three-point arc.  Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) also reached double figures for the 12th time this season, as she added 10 points in defeat for the Lions.

Tampa led from the start, and used hot shooting from the get-go to take command of the game.  The Spartans shot 49.1% (27-of-55) from the floor and buried 13 three-pointers (13-of-29) in the game.  UT also commanded the glass in the game with a 33-25 rebounding advantage.

The Spartans opened the contest on an 11-2 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 18 points in the opening half, and eventually taking a 38-25 lead into the half-time locker room.  Guiu and center Sheena Walton combined for 22 first half points with Guiu burying four three-pointers in the opening frame.

Saint Leo closed to within seven early in the second half with Holloway picking up a couple of quick buckets.  However, Tampa went on a 16-4 run to open up a 20 point lead with 8:25 left in the game.  The lead grew to a game-high 22 points before the final margin was established.

The Lions return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Lynn University in another SSC encounter.  Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
