Saint Leo, Fla. (January 5, 2008) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (7-5, 0-1 SSC) opened its Sunshine State Conference schedule with a 69-64 overtime loss at the hands of visiting Rollins College (8-2, 1-1 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  The loss was the second straight for the Lions in overtime.

Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) scored a game-high 21 points for the Lions, but Saint Leo was unable to overcome Rollins’ guard Jennifer Musgrove’s 18-point, 14-rebound effort.  Other Lions in double figures included Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) who scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.

After a tight opening, Rollins used a 13-2 run to open up an 11-point lead with 11:06 remaining in the first half.  The Lions closed to within two on the strength of a 7-0 run, but the Tars manufactured a 7-0 run of their own to restore a nine-point lead with 2:58 remaining in the opening frame.  The visitors eventually took a 28-23 lead into the half-time locker room.

Saint Leo roared back in the second half, taking a four point lead with 15:06 remaining in the stanza.  However, Rollins answered with a 10-0 run to regain the lead.  The lead exchanged hands twice in the closing 13:06 and there were seven ties, including the final tie of regulation when Monique Reynard (So., Valrico, Fla.) made one of two free throws to send the game into OT with one second left.

In the extra period, the Lions scored the opening bucket but Rollins went on a 9-2 run to close out the win and even its conference record for the season.

The Lions will continue their SSC schedule on Wednesday evening when they travel to the Bob Martinez Sports Center to face the University of Tampa.  The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
