Saint Leo, Fla. (December 15, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (5-2) upended the visiting University of West Florida Argonauts (5-5) with a 62-48 victory on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Saint Leo senior Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored in double figures for the seventh straight game with a game-high 15 points. Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) recorded her second career double-double with 10 points and a career and game-high 16 rebounds. Lauren Lee (Fr., Clearwater, Fla.) also chipped in with career-highs in points (9) and rebounds (9).
Saint Leo led from the opening tip, as Holloway scored the first points of the game with a lay-up. Holloway scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the opening frame. The Lions built their lead to 12 with 10:40 left in the first half before West Florida closed the gap to four with a 13-5 run. Saint Leo outscored UWF 12-4 in the final 4:54 of the opening stanza to take a 12-point lead into the half-time locker room.
SLU scored the first seven points in the second half to pull out to the largest lead of the game at 19. The Lions maintained a running margin of 15 points for the remainder of the contest, eventually win by 14.
The Lions outscored the Argonauts 26-24 in the paint and also had a 13-5 edge in second chance points. Saint Leo also held a commanding advantage on the boards, outrebounding West Florida 52-33.
The Lions will hit the hardwood this week at the Florida Southern Classic in Lakeland, Fla. Saint Leo will face Ashland University on Wednesday, December 19 and Georgia Southwestern State University on Thursday, December 20. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
