Saint Leo, Fla. (November 19, 2007) – Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) scored a career and game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (3-0) maintain its perfect start to the season with an 88-33 win over visiting University Puerto Rico-Cayey (0-2).
Daniels was 6-of-12 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw line to lead the Lions to the win. Also in double figures for Saint Leo were Roni Carithers (Sr., Tampa, Fla.), Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Nichole Tyler (Jr., Van Etten, N.Y.). Carithers scored 16 points, while both Holloway and Tyler scored 10 points in the win.
The Lions led from the opening tip, as they scored the first 14 points of the contest. The Toritos closed to within six with 7:56 left in the opening frame, but the Lions closed the half on a 14-4 run to take a 34-18 lead at half-time.
Saint Leo carried the momentum into the second half, as the Lions opened with a 27-4 run to open up a 39-point lead. The lead eventually grew to a game-high 56 points in the closing stages.
SLU held a commanding lead in points off of turnovers, turning the visitor’s 42 turnovers into 47 points compared to nine points for Cayey off of Lions’ turnovers. The Lions also enjoyed a 34-12 advantage in points in the paint, and outscored the Toritos 31-0 in second chance points,
Saint Leo will head to Lakewood, Colo. this weekend for the 2007 Colorado Christian University Thanksgiving Classic. The Lions will face tournament host CCU on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET with a game versus the University of Missouri-Rolla scheduled for Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Both contests will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.
