Saint Leo, Fla. (February 17, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (6-19, 3-11 SSC) lost 71-60 to Barry University (13-11, 8-6 SSC) in the final home game of the season on Saturday.
Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) led the Lions with 12 points, but Barry’s Amanda Mageean led all scorers with 15 points, and Bucs forward Alexandra Fernander added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds to lead the visitors to the win.
Barry led for much of the opening half, although there were seven ties in the opening stanza. The Bucs went on a 14-5 run to close the half and take a 40-32 lead at half-time.
In the second half, the visitors pulled out to an 11-point lead before Saint Leo crawled back to within five. Back-to-back three pointers by Carithers and Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) pulled Saint Leo to within three with exactly two minutes remaining, but Barry scored the final eight points of the game to cement the win.
Prior to opening tip, Saint Leo seniors Chemeka Amos (Zephyrhills, Fla.), Marina Arkhipova (Nikolaev, Ukraine and Jonelle Nieb (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) were honored as they played their final home game for the Lions.
Saint Leo will hit the road for its final two games of the regular season, traveling to Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday to face Florida Southern. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
