Saint Leo, Fla. (February 14, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (6-18, 3-10 SSC) was downed 83-66 by visiting Rollins College (19-5, 10-3 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference game played at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Saint Leo had a trio of players score in double figures, led by Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) who scored 13 points. Latasha Lawrence (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) poured in 12 points and Amanda Holloway (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) added 10 points.
The Lions managed to shoot 50.0% (25-of-50) against the nation’s second ranked field goal percentage defense.
However, Rollins had four of its five starters score in double figures led by Jennifer Dyer’s game-high 19 points. Larissa McDonough and Ines Teuma each scored 12, and Jennifer Musgrove rounded out the quartet with 11 points in the win.
The Lions led by four at half-time after a red-hot shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes. Saint Leo shot 61.5% from the field and was 5-of-6 from beyond the three-point arch in the opening stanza, as there were six lead changes and six ties before the Lions took the 42-38 edge into the locker room.
In the second half, Rollins used a 15-0 run to seize control of the contest and open up a 12-point advantage. SLU closed to within six with 5:16 remaining but would get no closer down the stretch with the final margin of 17 points marking the largest lead of the night.
Saint Leo will play its final home game of the season on Saturday when the Lions host Barry University for a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader. Opening tip for the women’s game is slated for 2:00 p.m. with the men’s game following at 4:00 p.m.
