Melbourne, Fla. (February 10, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (6-17, 3-9 SSC) was knocked off 70-54 on the road by Florida Tech (19-4, 11-2 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference game Saturday at Tech’s Clemente Center.
Saint Leo junior guard Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led all scorers with 21 points in the game, while Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) added 11 points. Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in defeat for the Lions.
Meanwhile, Florida Tech had a trio of players score in double figures, as a balanced team effort led to a fourth consecutive victory for the Panthers. Kristin Heminger led Tech with 14 points, while Jennifer Tamilio and Danielle Vaughn each scored 12 points.
Saint Leo scored the first five points of the game but back-to-back three-pointers by Tamilio put the Panthers ahead 6-5 early on. The lead changed hands a couple of times before a 15-1 helped the Panthers open up an 18-point lead late in the first half. But the Lions scored the final seven points of the half to trail 41-30 at the break.
Tech scored the opening four points of the second half, and led by double-digits for the majority of the second stanza. The Lions closed to within nine with 7:16 left but would get no closer, as they eventually fell by the 16-point margin.
Saint Leo returns home on Wednesday for another Sunshine State Conference game versus Rollins College. Opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
