St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 29, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (5-14, 3-6 SSC) was edged 62-58 in overtime by the Eckerd College (6-14, 1-8 SSC) on Monday evening in a Sunshine State Conference game.

Saint Leo was led by Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) who scored 13 points, while Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.  Jonelle Nieb (Sr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Latasha Lawrence (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) also scored nine points in defeat for the Lions.

Eckerd’s Gabby Gattuso led all scorers with 18 points, as a total of three Tritons scored in double figures.  Mo Gattuso netted 12 points, while Stephanie Grace added 10 points.

A closely contested battle saw 12 lead changes and eight ties, and neither team led by more than five points.  Eckerd forced the overtime when K.C. Gavin hit a pair of free throws with 3.5 seconds left in regulation, and the Tritons led throughout the overtime after Grace opened the frame with a three-pointer.

Saint Leo returns to the hardwood on Wednesday night when it hosts the University of Tampa in an SSC encounter.  The women’s game will be the first of a doubleheader with opening tip slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
