Saint Leo, Fla. (December 10, 2006) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (2-7, 0-1 SSC) fell 69-65 to visiting Nova Southeastern University (2-4, 1-0 SSC) in both teams Sunshine State Conference opener on Sunday.

Saint Leo guard Amanda Holloway (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored a team-high 19 points and Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) posted her first double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  However, NSU forward Amber Bishko led all scorers with 20 points, as the Sharks opened the conference schedule with a win.

The game was close early on, as the teams exchanged the lead four times in the opening seven minutes.  An 11-0 run by NSU helped the Sharks open up their largest lead of the game at 29-17 with 5:37 left in the opening half.  Saint Leo put together a 9-2 run to pull within five, but eventually went into the half-time locker room trailing 39-32.

The Lions scored seven of the first nine points in the second half to claw within two, but the Sharks answered with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to nine with 12:20 remaining in the game.  Saint Leo tied the score on a jumper by Holloway with 6:05 left, but a 10-2 run by NSU took the game out of reach despite a late rally by the Lions.

Saint Leo returns to action on Thursday, December 14 when it travels to Ft. Myers, Fla. to face Florida Gulf Coast University.  Opening tip is slated for 5:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the Internet.  Visit for “Listen Live” links.
