Saint Leo, Fla. (November 28, 2006) – Four Lions scored in double figures, leading the Saint Leo women’s basketball team (2-4) to a 74-55 win over visiting Edward Waters College on Tuesday night.
Saint Leo junior Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led all scorers with 20 points, while Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) added 11 points. Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) and Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) each added 10 points in the game.
Edward Waters ran out to an 11-4 lead early in the contest, but Saint Leo put together a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to take the lead for good. The lead eventually reached 23 at the half-time break, as Holloway scored 15 of her game-high 20 in the opening frame.
The Lions kept the advantage throughout the second half, eventually stretching it to as many as 26 points early in the second stanza. EWC closed to within 15 points with 14:45 left in the contest, but SLU answered with a 10-3 run to end any hopes of a comeback and end a three-game losing streak.
The Saint Leo women’s basketball team will return to the floor this weekend in Valdosta, Ga. where it will participate in the 2006 Days INNvitational. The Lions will face the University of West Georgia on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before facing Valdosta State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
