Pensacola, Fla. (November 25, 2006) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (1-4) fell 70-50 to the University of West Florida (2-3) in the final game of the UWF Turkey Day Classic on Saturday in Pensacola, Fla. The loss was the third straight for the Lions, while the win was the second straight for the Argonauts who finished their own tournament with a 2-0 record.
Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) and Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) each led Saint Leo with nine points. UWF guard Laura Davis led West Florida with a career-high 17 points, while forward Karmeshia Easley nearly recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds to help lead West Florida to the win.
West Florida led wire-to-wire for the second consecutive night. After starting Friday's game against Barry on a 12-2 run, West Florida opened the game on a 10-0 run over the first 4:13 on Saturday. Saint Leo did not tally its first basket until nearly five minutes into the game. The Argonauts eventually built an 18-point advantage and used an 8-2 run over the final 2:29 to own a 41-22 halftime lead.
Saint Leo scored the first five points of the second half, however West Florida immediately responded with a 7-0 run. The Argonauts led by at least 16 points over the final 10 minutes of the game en route to the win.
The Lions return home to the Bowman Center on Tuesday night when they will host Edward Waters College at 7:00 p.m.
