Saint Leo, Fla. (November 18, 2006) – Junior forward Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led all scorers with 16 points and all but one Lion player scored, as the Saint Leo women’s basketball team (1-1) knocked off Flagler College 77-57 on Saturday night.
The win was the first of the new season for the Lions, as they ended the 2006 Sleep Inn Classic with a 1-1 mark. Earlier in the evening, Clayton State University defeated Northwood University 100-71 to finish as the only undefeated team in the tourney.
Saint Leo junior guard Denequia Parrish (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) added 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the comprehensive victory for the Lions. Flagler (0-2) had three players score in double figures, with both Jamie Allenbaugh and Elizabeth Tuzzolo scoring 13 points apiece.
After Allenbaugh opened the game by hitting one of two free throws to a 1-0 Flagler lead, Saint Leo took the lead for the remainder of the contest on a jumper by Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago). The Lions raced out to a 27-10 advantage, and eventually stretched their lead to as many as 19 points in the opening half before settling for a 44-27 half-time lead,
Saint Leo never led by less than 14 points throughout the second half en route to the first win of the new season.
The Lions shot 47.7% (31-of-65) from the floor and outrebounded the Saints 47-31. SLU also buried six three-pointers, as the Lions shot 42.9% (6-of-14) from beyond the arch.
Saint Leo will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, November 21 when the Lions host the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon. Opening tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
