Saint Leo, Fla. (November 17, 2006) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (0-1) opened the 2006-07 season with a 62-60 loss to Northwood University (1-0) on Friday night in the 2006 Sleep Inn Classic hosted by SLU. The game was the first in program history for Northwood.
Saint Leo junior forward Marquita Fenn (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high nine boards. However, Northwood guard Christina Daniels scored 20 points on 6-of-8 from the floor including six three-pointers to lead the Seahawks to the win in their first-ever contest.
Northwood took a 34-32 lead into the half-time locker room, as Daniels scored 14 points in the opening half. The lead changed hands four times in the first 20-minutes, and the two teams were tied on five occasions. Neither team led by more than seven points in the opening stanza.
The visitors never relinquished their half-time lead, as they led by as many as 10 points in the second half. A 6-0 run in the space of just over two minutes stretched the lead to 61-51. SLU battled back by scoring nine of the last 10 points, but could not complete the rally.
Earlier in the evening, Clayton State University knocked off Flagler College 76-44. Saint Leo will face Flagler tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the final day of the 2006 Sleep Inn Classic, while Clayton State will face Northwood (5:30 p.m.)
